Video Talk:Swamp cooler
Interest to non-expert
I looked up this article only because I wondered about the distinctive shape of cooling towers. Why are they that shape? Is it an "actual" hyperboloid, or does it just kinda look like a hyperboloid?

If anyone else wants to add an image, just go up on your roof, open a panel, take a picture, and upload it. Enough with these copyrighted images off the internet.
I feel dumb for uploading the swamp-cooler.jpg image. I assumed (because of the location on my computer) that it was one of the many images I had that were general clip-art and free-to-use images. I think I should be able to just take a picture later this month (when we open up our swamp cooler) and upload it in place of the other image. My bad.
Merge with Evaporative cooling
If there are no objections. I think this article is ready to be merged/moved into this article Evaporative cooling because Swamp cooler is stating to overlap and there still much more to be added on this subject. Maybe someone can beat me to it and just do it. Swamp cooler will then become a REDIRECT. Buster 19:14, Jul 1, 2004 (UTC)
- Strongly object to this. Swamp cooler addresses an aspect of evaporative cooling. As a crude example, articles about ants are not merged with the main article about insects. Swamp Cooling exists to provide information as a sub-set of, or provide a counterpoint to the Air conditioning article. Leave Swamp Cooler as it is, but import information from Evaporative cooling. Overlapping information is fine in an encyclopedia, especially as Swamp cooler provides examples of applied evaporative cooling. Further discussion would be welcomed. --Abqwildcat 20:57, 1 Jul 2004 (UTC)

- OK, I can vaguely see a reason to keep the articles separate but that is reason enough for me. Although, I should have stated my goal originally. It is to to change the name of the swamp cooler article to a more appropriate name. This leaves me with "Evaporative cooler" which doesn't quite cut it, may as well leave as Swamp cooler. I don't really feel more scientific names would be appropriate. Perhaps the Evaporative cooling article can be renamed to something like "Psychrometry" which to use your example of ant/insect is a more appropriate hierarchy and allow a more comprehensive overview of the science of air and humidity. On the other hand the paragraphs on airplane evap cooling seem to fit better on the swamp cooler article. Maybe that should be moved over to swamp cooler. Buster 00:00, Jul 2, 2004 (UTC)

- A humble suggestion for a more appropriate name: "Evaporative Air Conditioning" This is what I was looking for when I searched, and the closest match was Evaporative cooling, which wasn't exactly what I wanted. Because Swamp cooler was only briefly mentioned as a colloquialism, it was only my idle curiosity that brought me to this article, which was exactly what I was looking for. Being in Australia, the colloquialism is not used AFAIK, so the title is not really an appropriate title for something that is quite commonly used here. Seems to me that Swamp cooler should redirect to Evaporative air conditioning, with an explanation about the colloquialism.Codify 11:54, 11 January 2006 (UTC)

Take away "Cooling towers"
The subject "Cooling towers" deserves a separate article, as it existed before. If needed the HVAC application of cooling towers can be directed to that. MGTom 15:20, 2005 Jan 20 (UTC)
- I agree. This article was primarily about the home and commercial applications of swamp coolers as they're typically called in non-HVAC/cooling plant arrangements. Cooling Towers would be a good link from here, as well as from Evaporative Cooling and from HVAC articles, but deserves its own article. --ABQCat 17:03, 20 Jan 2005 (UTC)

- Take a look at the "revived" cooling tower article & improve! MGTom 09:05, 2005 Jan 21 (UTC)

- The subject "Cooling towers" deserves a separate article, as it existed before. There was no previous article on cooling towers. It was a redirect only. However, cooling towers are really just evaporative coolers and operate and function much like residential applications. There much to be written about cooling towers but unless someone does a comprehensive article theres no need for it to be separated till then. If it's the large nuclear power plant cooling tower image that freaking everyone out remove it from the article. --67.3.219.78 06:44, 26 October 2005 (UTC)

Other design
I've seen a design of evaporative cooler which has a thin amount of water in a tray with a fan above it. The fan sucks air from directly above the tray and draws air over the water, and presumably it evaporates. I presume this is probably less efficient because of surface tension. Is this something that should be mentioned?. G-Man 21:49, 27 July 2005 (UTC)
Title Change
This article need to be retitled to the proper term 'Evaporative cooler' from the fun but informal 'Swamp cooler'. More later ... 129.237.114.171 21:04, 26 October 2006 (UTC)
- Looks like this article was at one time named correctly. So a re-redirect is what's needed. I'll add to the article why we often call them swamp coolers, however. FactsAndFigures 01:00, 27 October 2006 (UTC) (an ASHRAE person)
